It was a usual highway ride that Jack used to take in the weekend. Today was unusual and a bit cold with the breeze blowing little strong and snow drifting heavily around. The dust twirled in the heavy wind and entered the car making him blind. He pondered blindly to gain control of the car and headed to apply the brake. But it was just a second late that he hit someone on road. As he was regaining his sight due to the sand breeze, he could not figure out whom or what he hit. In a state of shock he turned the engine off and sprung out of the car to see the inevitable. At the first sight he thought he had hit some beast as it appeared fully covered by fur. But a closer examination revealed an old man of 50’s wearing a fur coat. He was suffocating and choking as jack watched him with a sense of guilt. It never struck him to take the victim to a nearby hospital until he saw blood oozing from the old man’s forehead and hip. He fastened him to the car hurriedly that he forgot it would hurt the old man if he handled rapidly as the victim suffered multiple fractures. Now a new one caused by his careless handling of his torso. More and more guilt piling up he felt a lump in his throat as he maneuvered his Lexus towards some shelter that would regain this half dead man to his toes. But in all vain he had to pull up some 10 odd kilometers before he could sight a hospital.
With all care now by not making the mistake that he did last time, he placed him on the layoff brought by the caretakers from the hospital and sighed a big relief. He felt light now but guilt still in momentum pushing him to take responsibility for his crime (accident). Now thoughts spurred upon him to fly away the scene and escape the consequences of his action. But just then the siren alarmed like hell sounding hard on him.
The Police arrived and the officials armed with pistols moved in a great speed towards the body and came back with a rigid grin and whispers within them as if they had got a case to play with. He was puzzled “Why the heck are they grinning seeing loads of blood from a poor man badly hurt. Stone hearted bastards”. More than this he cursed himself and felt numb for nearly killing a wise old man as aged as his father. Then he saw the men clad in white close the body with a cloth as they declared him dead. Now its not nearly killing but "I killed him".
He got into his car but the men in black interrupted “Can we have your presence for some details”. Now he understood what’s going to happen next. He thought of informing his lawyer to get him out of the situation and asked for it. But the reply was stern and clear but unexpectedly in a lighter tone “No need sir”.He was confused by the usage of 'SIR'. Who else on earth would expect to be respected for causing a murder like this, he thought to himself. But it took sometime for him to understand the situation after the lead man of the black suits briefed him and ended with a “Bravo! You killed a serial killer who was hiding for more than 8 years”. He felt his head spinning now and felt himself as an idiotic clown among an elite crowd. He had actually hit a “Real convict” who was on the run having a shot in his ribs from the police. They were on a look out for him from the morning in the highways after he escaped their sight bleeding badly into the nearby bushes. And Jack had finished their half done job effortlessly. |
